People use substances for many different reasons. Some people may use substances in for recreational purposes, whilst others may use substances to mask and escape issues that they may be finding hard to face. Addiction is when you have a strong physical or psychological need to do something or use something.

The effects of substance addiction
Substance use that lead to addictions can cause serious damage to relationships. The changes in mood caused by the cravings and coming down of the substance can make people around you feel scared and on edge. You may be experiencing a lot of conflict in your relationships which causes you to withdraw from friends and family due to shame or fear of being judged. The feeling of loneliness will also increase your desire to use substances for comfort.

When using substances, you will experience changes in your mood such as feelings of frustration, irritability, and anger is most common. You may also feel sad and empty.

You may also begin to lose track of daily routine and responsibilities and neglect yourself. This includes an inability to focus, not going to school or taking time off work, arriving to events late etc.

You may find yourself engaging in risky behaviour such as driving under the influence, promiscuous sex etc. This occurs as substances decrease our inhibitions and we crave similar highs.
